Selecting the proper weight plates is essential whether you are building a home garage setup, outfitting a personal training studio, or equipping a commercial facility. Choosing the correct plates ensures equipment longevity, protects your floor and barbells, and optimises lift performance.

Key Considerations Before You Buy

Before selecting a plate type, evaluate how your facility will be used:
  • Collar Opening (Olympic Specs)

    Ensure all plates feature a standard 50.4 mm collar opening, making them compatible with standard Olympic barbells.

  • Lifting Style

    • If you perform Olympic weightlifting or CrossFit (cleans, snatches, jerks) where the barbell is dropped from overhead or hip height, you must use bumper plates.
    • If you stick to powerlifting or general machine/rack work (bench press, squatting inside a rack, cable work), cast iron or polyurethane (PU) plates are suitable.
  • Plate Thickness & Bar Capacity

    Thinner plates allow you to fit more weight onto a barbell sleeve (standard sleeve length is ~406 mm). Thicker rubber plates cap total load potential earlier.

  • Bounce & Noise

Weight Plates FAQ

Weight plates include bumper plates, cast iron plates, rubber-coated plates and fractional plates. Bumper plates are designed for dropping, iron plates provide a compact and durable option, rubber plates help protect floors and reduce noise, and fractional plates support small strength increases.
Olympic plates have a larger 50 mm centre hole and fit Olympic barbells, while standard plates have a smaller centre hole and fit standard barbells. Always check the barbell sleeve diameter before buying plates, and use plates and collars that match your equipment.
Start with a pair of lighter plates that allows you to build gradually while maintaining good technique. A practical starter selection may include 1.25 kg, 2.5 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg pairs, with heavier plates added as your strength develops. Fractional plates are useful for smaller, consistent progressions.
Load the bar evenly, place heavier plates closest to the centre, slide each plate fully onto the sleeve and secure both sides with collars. Keep the bar stable while loading and unloading. Colour coding usually identifies plate weight, but colours can vary by manufacturer, so always check the markings.
Bumper plates are thicker and made from rubber, making them suitable for controlled drops and Olympic lifting, while iron plates are thinner and often provide more load on the bar. Store plates on a suitable rack in a dry area, wipe off sweat and dirt, and inspect plates, hubs and barbell sleeves regularly for damage or wear.
