Bumper Plate FAQs

Colour bumper plates are typically competition-spec, with each weight denomination colour-coded to IWF standards — making it easy to identify loads at a glance during training or competition. Black bumper plates are a more economical option suited to general strength training and CrossFit-style workouts. Both are made from vulcanised rubber and designed to be dropped from overhead, but colour plates generally offer tighter weight tolerances and a longer service life under high-drop conditions.
Bumper plates are designed for standard Olympic barbells with a 50mm sleeve diameter. They should not be used on 25mm or 28mm standard barbells, as the bore size will not fit correctly and can damage both the plates and the bar. Always verify your barbell's sleeve diameter before purchasing bumper plates, particularly for commercial facilities where multiple bar types may be in use.
For a commercial CrossFit or functional fitness facility, a minimum of 4–6 sets per platform is recommended to accommodate simultaneous class training. A standard set includes pairs of 10kg, 15kg, 20kg, and 25kg plates per barbell station. High-volume facilities should also stock additional 5kg and 10kg change plates for warm-up and accessory work. Avoid dropping bumper plates on concrete, vinyl, or thin foam flooring, as this will damage both the plates and the subfloor.
High-quality vulcanised rubber bumper plates typically last 5–10 years in commercial use with regular dropping. Cheaper economy plates may crack or delaminate at the collar within 1–2 years under heavy use. To extend plate life, avoid dropping from excessive heights unnecessarily, store plates vertically on a dedicated rack, and inspect collars and inserts annually for signs of separation or wear.
